What if the people who knew you best
Weren’t the ones who shared your home or your nest?
What if a stranger could see through your disguise,
While familiar faces looked past your eyes?
You searched for a place where your heart could belong,
Where you didn’t need to pretend to be strong.
You wanted a circle that welcomed your flaws,
Not affection that came with invisible laws!
Perhaps a friend stayed when your world fell apart,
And offered a shelter for your battered heart.
Perhaps someone listened when family wouldn’t hear,
And made you feel human instead of your fear.
You laughed with outsiders, you shared your dreams,
Found unexpected comfort in unlikely teams!
A borrowed shoulder, a late-night call’,
A friend who reminded you that you weren’t small’.
So you built your connections, one bond at a time,
Learning which friendships were worth every climb.
Some became family, some drifted away,
Some taught you the truth that words couldn’t say.
But wait! When a friendship goes quiet or ends,
Do you fear losing more than a friend?
Does every goodbye awaken the ache
Of all the old bonds you were scared you might break?
What if your deepest fear isn’t being alone,
But finding a family and losing your home?
What if you cling to the ones who understand,
Afraid that one day they’ll withdraw their hand?
Yet look how far you’ve travelled, how much you have grown!
You found little pockets of love of your own.
You learned that connection can bloom anywhere,
That family can form through the choice to be there!
Now comes the moment to soften the past,
To stop asking every new friendship to last.
You can cherish the people who helped you get through,
Without fearing that distance means love isn’t true.
Make peace with the family that couldn’t fulfil
Every longing you carried, every unspoken will.
You need not deny them, nor pretend you weren’t hurt’;
You can honour your roots without swallowing dirt’.
So tell me, dear soul, when home felt far away,
Did friends become family in their own quiet way?
And can you embrace all the love that you’ve known,
Without fearing you’ll lose every place you call home?
