You care—
and suddenly
their problem becomes yours.
Someone hurts them,
and something inside you
stands up.
You defend.
You speak.
You confront.
You step between them
and whatever threatens them.
Love, for you’,
may not always be gentle.
Sometimes it arrives
with clenched fists,
with courage,
with the instinct to protect
what matters.
There is beauty in that.
To stand beside someone
when the world becomes difficult
is one of the oldest forms of love’.
But there is a boundary
even love can cross.
Their fear
becomes your fear.
Their conflict
becomes your conflict.
Their decision
becomes your responsibility.
And before you realise it,
you are fighting a battle
they never asked you to fight.
Perhaps you believe
you are protecting them.
Perhaps they needed
only someone to stand beside them—
not someone
to stand in their place.
Because love does not always mean
removing every obstacle
from another person’s path.
Sometimes love means
trusting them enough
to face the obstacle themselves.
You can hold their hand
without taking their sword.
You can defend them
without becoming consumed
by their enemies.
You can care deeply
without carrying everything.
So ask yourself—
Are you supporting them,
or fighting battles
that aren’t yours?
Perhaps the strongest love
is not the love
that fights every battle.
It is the love
that knows which battles
to leave in another person’s hands.
